MY ACADEMIA CHOICES.

Considering that both my parents were once campus students, it was a matter of me working hard in my high school to joining a campus of my choice. As a girl child from an Islamic family and the oldest in the family of three, my parents wouldn’t allow me going to another province for my University. It was a dream come true going to a university in a far a way province. Luckily I was placed in Umma University Kajiado Campus but unfortunately it was a “no go zone”. After a long debate with my parents of which university in my province will they want me to land in to, my great uncle gave a suggestion of The Technical University of Mombasa. I didn’t have a say about it. Anyway, the Sky is a limit and in any university I can get my papers.

Ooh yeah! It is a beginning of a new chapter of life as an independent lady. Free to be whoever I want and go wherever I want. As a freshman at TUM under the impression that with such freedom and lack of restriction, I will reach the stars and achieve your dreams. Me being the good kid who obeyed the rules set by my parents and respected them greatly, I couldn’t fail them even with the amount of freedom I have. As a Muslim too I had to respect the rules of my religion. Yeah, changes are inevitable, mostly for the freshmen in campus, didn’t change a bit. Being vibrant, hardworking and focused has always been be. My parents were not wrong at all of placing me at TUM. Though there are m much better campuses that this one out there, TUM is the best choice for my course, diploma in Mass Communication.

Mass communication course needs a lot of practical and practice. Luckily the TUMO radio, an online radio station in the campus I once worked for, the projects and the attachment gave me a lot of experience. I’m now able to do a lot of things in the field of media like news presentation, hosts programs, writing news and blogs.

“No freedom just work hard. The freedom you want, you’ll get it after you get employed. Your education is the key to employment. And please choose your friends wisely”, words that my parents would remained me every time. Well my parents were afraid me changing into a bad girl and bringing shame to the family. Working hard is all what I could do in my primary, second and now in campus. My grades is all what matters. I can’t afford disappointing my parents. I’ll make it here at TUM. Friends, when in campus try to be wise in choosing people that will be in your circle of the 2 “ships” (friendship and relationship). I believe campuses are the best teacher of life, I believed that out of the stories my parents and relatives told me. But when you choose the right circle of people, you will have the good and best life in campus. I went for a small circle of close friends. It's a blessing that all my classmate became my friends.

My campus experience isn’t bad but there is that time in the semester I’m having so much assignments and continuous assessment tests. I feel so overloaded with school work and sometimes I couldn’t sleep. Or those times when I get exhausted an need to rest but classes are waiting to be attended. Allhamdulillah I did it. Its almost coming to an end. I’m actually on my final semester. No matter what, learn to never give up.

That one lesson I learned from my education was to keep the lines of communication open with your lecturers as much as possible. It’s not uncommon to never interact with your lecturers throughout the entire course of the class, but it’s important to make the effort to do so. You never know if they could provide you with a reference later down the line or if maybe they run a club or are part of an organization that you could benefit from or even studying material for the course.
