THE 24 HOURS ECONOMY
Found along the Kenya’s coastline of an island, that is one of the urban cities in Kenya greatly known as THE BLUE AND WHITE CITY. However, Mombasa port is the end of line for rail, roads and pipeline that of a thousand of kilometers. Providing a direct trade connection from the landlocked country, Uganda to other African countries comprising Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, southern Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia.
The city of Mombasa, also known as the city of merchants, since way back during the reign of the Vasco Da Gama. The Mombasa old port traded between the East Africa and the Far East, which it grew to a new port after the construction of the great Kenta Uganda railways, making the port experience immense traffic until to date due to the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Managed by the Kenya Port Authority (KPA) and three non- Kenyan corporate investors and owned by the government of Kenya, Mombasa port plays an important role in the whole of Kenyans economy despite of Mombasa being an industrial city, natural-based tourism and fishing zone. However, the KPA economy has a major influence on the people of Mombasa in many ways.
What ways?
Mombasa port has become a catalyst for economic development of the Mombasa county and the whole of coast province benefiting the residents in many ways.
The KPA in partnership with different non-governmental investors and companies have come up with different development projects.
THE SOUTHERN DONGO KUNDU BYPASS
Development of infrastructure this entails road construction like the Dongo Kundu bypass, construction of other ports Shimoni and Lamu port. It will cover many job opportunities not only directly related to the port operation but also indirectly to all fields (agriculture, fishery, manufacturing, logistics, transport trade, commerce and many others). Therefore enabling bigger percentage of the residents of Mombasa secure job opportunities either through self-employment or through being employed. Also reducing the crime rate in the city.
EMPLOYEES AT KPA
Apart of KPA coming with development project for job creation in different sectors, through its revue Mombasa has been improved its health sector. Many hospitals have been constructed and well equipped in order to benefit the people of Mombasa.
When it comes to living standards, KPA has also played an important role in curbing poor swaging, clean water supply and quality health by funding different projects.
However, studies from different researchers on the economy of Mombasa have argued that an efficient port is needed for more trade to happen. The Mombasa port is congested despite of the 770,800, a small volume of containers it handles annually. It will be much more beneficial if he Mombasa port becomes the biggest port in the whole of Africa.
